In April of 2007, John Maeda wrote a haiku entitled think-make-think and posted it to his blog. I think that it went relatively unnoticed. Over the next few months, that haiku often found its way to the forefront of my mind. When our studio, the Public Design Center, acquired the remnants of a discarded arrow sign, it was immediately clear to me that think-make-think was the perfect piece for the sign due to the haiku's small size and its potency.

Due to a scholarship, I spent eighteen months of 2007 and 2008 in Seoul, South Korea. I took one photo every day for my picture diary. Fishline was taken May 31st, 2008, in Seonyudo, a small island located twenty-six miles off the west coast of the country. Fish is dried like this everywhere in the countryside of Korea.

My works on paper speak to the relationship between the improvisation and immediacy of gestural drawing and the materiality and meticulous planning of painted form. In this dialogue, the work addresses one of the conundrums of existence: the desire for freedom and spontaneity as well as for routine and order. The mind constantly strives to reconcile these opposing states and swings back and forth, desiring one, then desiring the other.

My work is about my life at the present moment, an accumulation of short-term memories: didn't sleep last night, just now I am drinking my tea, long phone conversation, soup for lunch, stubbed my toe, starting to get a sore throat, more daylight, keep having to pee, elections, waiting for the G train.

My interest in memory is fueled by personal experience; my father has been diagnosed with a brain disorder that has left him with no short-term memory. Through his experience I have gained both an interest in and an appreciation for the mundane, and both short and long-term memories.

How much of our long-term memory is a sum of small insignificant events? Is this whole greater then the sum of its parts? How do short and long term memory influence each other? If short-term memory is lost, is it only a matter of time before we lose our long-term memory? When do our daily experiences transform into our recollections of the past? And ultimately, what is the impact of memory on our concept of our selves and our placement within the world? By abstracting and re-presenting these events through paint I have been able to hold on to a little longer, understand a little better, and have physical evidence of, my existence.

These words, "so, help, me," mark the portentous conclusion of the Presidential Oath of Office on Inauguration Day. When uttered by the President Elect (or the incumbent chief) the phrase is strongly stated with resolve, pride, and willed gravitas. In a country where we look to our elected leaders for guidance, and where our leaders (more often than not) turn to god, "so help me" might be uttered, in both faith and fear, by candidate and constituent, alike. Every four years, when this particular nation selects one of its citizens (in celebration and/or misery) to lead us toward a better tomorrow, so help us all.

I shot the first series of amnh images, in fall 2005, as an antidote to my obsession with street photography; the darkness and languid pace of the museum was a welcome change from my normally twitchy shooting of New York City strangers.

Three years to the day after I shot the first amnh image, I returned to the museum on a whim, curious to see if those silhouettes could still hold my interest. I came away just as enthralled by the power of a simple silhouette. I remain fascinated by the surreal mix of living and dead, real and artificial, human and animal, and by the whimsy and wistfulness suggested by such juxtapositions.

I like spending time drawing at The American Museum of Natural
History. For this project I drew 132 of the birds at the museum.
There are owls and eagles and finches and hornbills and about one
hundred others. I draw these birds because I am interested in
learning about both their similarities and differences. I also really
like how they look.

This edition is a result of this documentation.

Stars and Stripes is a personal piece based on a rejected New Yorker cover sketch. That sketch had the same ariel view of the upper deck but in it the players were all looking up at the viewer, bowing and tipping their hats, as if they were stage actors receiving appreciative applause. Baseball, after all, is a performance meant to entertain.

When I conceived this piece, I instead made it about the geometry of the field and the action that is constantly taking place. I had originally thought of making a diptych, the second painting identical to this one, but fast-forwarded to show what happened after the batter hit the pitched ball. I never did paint that second piece though.

The Babe in the Negro Leagues is a personal piece. I took the opportunity to portray one of my baseball heroes in a setting I also enjoy, the advertising-cluttered outfield fences at stadiums of yore. The hand-painted quality of the old typography in the signage is somehow more authentic and attractive than anything one sees today.

While the Babe barnstormed the world in the off-season and played one of his last games against the New York Cubans of the Negro Leagues, this portrait is purely hypothetical.
