Most of my paintings are begun from experience, from the elements of a memory. Sometimes I like to let the specific elements of those experiences repeat in a new work, allowing them to simplify or clarify something from a moment. However, lately things have ended up more visually complex - with more people, more intense landscapes, and more layering.

live quietly in this midwestern city of ghosts and mutterers.
-Charles Baxter

"Somewhere in Middle America" in the most basic sense, is a project about the 400 and 500 blocks of Keech Avenue, an examination of my immediate surroundings. Bordered on one side by Michigan Stadium and by Almendinger Park on the other, both entities play an important role in the identity of the neighborhood. We have literally thousands of visitors come from all over the country to visit the stadium and participate in the American ritual of Big-10 College Football. People also come from all around town to visit the park and participate in activities there. Visitors to both places inevitably end up passing through Keech Avenue.

My photographs depict this street and the people that inhabit it- both the ones that live here and the ones that visit. Some I know quite well, others are complete strangers. Overall, the work tells the story of a community that is holding on to a vanishing way of life. It is about a group of people living quite literally in Middle America- geographically, economically, politically- at a time when our notions concerning what this means are quickly changing. Having shunned the constant call of the "suburbs," we live in a small neighborhood close to downtown. Here, the passing of time is defined as much by the rituals we collectively participate in as by the months on a calendar. This work is a celebration of and possibly a eulogy to our way of life.

Over the past few years, Peterson has become known for depicting the black suburban everyman and his nuclear family set in dreamlike landscapes. Twisted, however, represents the artist's decided turn away from the childlike wonder and vacant plasticity of his archetypal subjects and their idyllic settings. Inspired partly by CNN and partly by horror movies, his figures are twisted, stretched, and mangled. Weather is a malevolent force. A dystopian vision has replaced the eerie casual detachment: whereas once his characters smiled, now they explode.

This image is one from an ongoing series made on a farm in western Wisconsin and based around the theme of Memento Mori. Having grown up in London and always lived in cities, I am fascinated by the countryside with its evidence of the cycle of life and death all around.

I chose photogravure as the medium because, as an etching process, it has the ability to render the image closer to a pencil drawing than a photograph.

Growing up with a strong relationship to the natural environment I developed a heightened awareness of the conflict between human systems and ecological systems. Through my interest in science (particularly theoretical physics, the String Theory work of Brian Greene, evolutionary biology and the work of Charles Darwin and Darwinian geneticist Steve Jones) I have been inspired by the interconnectedness of matter, especially as it is manifested in ecological systems; specifically, systems impacted by humans in non-sustainable ways. At the heart of my work is the continuous human struggle to reconcile the tensions between the natural world, art, science and lived experience. My artwork over the past five years has explored these tensions through paintings and drawings that contrast the kineticism of the natural “living” world with the static “inanimate” depictions of natural history illustration.

My photographs tend to be about spatial relationships and the connotation of objects. I am most interested in spaces that have an inherent tension between objects, such as high school. In my photographs, I am trying to reveal and describe how places, objects and light can have a profound affect on our mental state.

In my current paintings on paper, I am inventing new spaces and a vivid contemporary folklore to explain them. "Cul de sac" and "IPO Headquarters" are extrapolations of urban spaces in Miami. The pawn shops and laundromats, realtors and XXX adult video stores are elements in my stageplay. Tilting planes upward against gravity, building with crooked walls, quilting together fields of color, overflowing patterns, and pasting words from signs onto building facades like poetry, I work in the constantly shifting pictorial space of theater. Pattern provides the vital pulse, or visual rhythm, and energizes the atmosphere in my work.

Representational photography, like all art forms, has always generated meaning through signifiers: recognizable elements which connote specific content to viewers. In my photographs domestic matter serves as such a signifier, offering a window into its owners' personalities, moral values and behaviours. The people whose homes I photograph are generally not well known to me and their spaces are essentially foreign. During a visit limited to only a few hours, I look for found objects through which I can create a subjective portrait of an unseen person. Through this exercise, I aim to explore what relationship exists between identity and domestic matter.

My photographs pierce the traditional veil of domestic privacy by scrutinizing the specific personal belongings found in my subject's homes. The things in my photographs belong to my subjects, but by looking through my lens and the inherent imposition of my interests, beliefs and stereotypes, they may experience them as if they are another's.

My work examines relational space. Specifically, it explores the idea that space, while having no positive existence of its own, allows everything else to exist.

My paintings invite the viewer to experience new and emergent spaces.

I use rhythmic circles, sweeping lines, and vibrant colors to illustrate a perpetually changing environment.

Technically, I like to display all the decisions made during the evolution of a painting, so I leave visible the paint's texture and other marks. These are essential signposts to experiencing the painting's development and my creative process.

At this point, I want to explore these spaces by experimenting with new palettes, adding more spontaneous elements, working larger, and learning more about different conceptions of space.

This image was made while eating take-out at my kitchen table alone. About to graduate, with no job lined up and an unsettling student loan debt, success was something that seemed unattainable yet so desperately necessary. The fortune cookie was sealed in plastic but the fortune was outside of the cookie and half of it severed in the crimped edge of the plastic packaging. It was an odd sight, but I rationalized that even fortune cookies are made and packaged in factories, and this particular fortune had simply been a little off on the assembly line and was caught in the sealer. The cookie in the package was void of a complete fortune, which was the most disturbing thing to me during a time I was questioning every aspect of the decisions I had made in the past few years.

This image is part of a larger project titled Room Temperature which consists of images of objects and places that represent similar observances of relative successes and failures.

The canary is a small bird indigenous to the Canary Islands Madeira and the Azores. They have been bred in captivity since the seventeenth century and are famous as show birds and household pets throughout the world. Adopted by British bird breeders, who over time have created many different variants of color to the breed, they have also increased its size from that of its wild cousins. Canary owners vary from the obsessive breeders who show their prize birds with a competitive banter and bird lovers who just enjoy the sweet tweeting, and the colorful presence of their feathered friend.

When I photographed these birds I approached them as if I were photographing a human being; granting them the same importance and attempting to highlight the individual personalities of these sociable birds. I find each bird has an air about them; be it proud, shy or bemused, there is always something which is added to by their colorful appearance-- giving the feeling that they are wearing their Sunday best.

Yellow Canary #1 is part of an ongoing series. I plan to photograph many other varieties of show birds, such as canaries, budgies, finches and love birds.
