Good day, collectors! Following up on yesterday's Simon Fujiwara debut, we have more new art from another new-to-20x200 artist from across the pond. New Yorkers might have had the pleasure of seeing Alistair Frost’s breezy and bright paintings in his recent solo show, Airplane Mode—a must see and critic's pick—at Chelsea gallery Zach Feuer. Today's editions, C, M, Y and K, are prints from works featured in the exhibition.
Named for the four-color printing process which uses cyan, magenta and yellow plates against a "key," or black, plate—layering these colors on top of white, you can make almost any other color, the possible variations are nearly endless—each monochromatic image features the stark cut-out of an anonymous figure. While minimal, the forms Alistair's created are decidedly female and strangely familiar. Using ubiquitous, though sometimes fleeting, symbols culled from contemporary life—think clip art, signage—Alistair takes cues from the trove of painters that have come before him—think Philip Guston in particular—and creates a language all his own.
Alistair's visual shorthand is a secret of sorts, ready for telling, reading and interpretation. Like words whispered in a game of telephone, as his imagery's been translated from one medium to the next—from various sources, digital and analog, to his canvases (and here, again, to pigment prints) through our eyes and brains, with our own assorted (and often personal) associations—its meaning changes. While ideas about leisure, lifestyles and the artistic process are often linked to his work, in the end, I think, deciding on exactly what Alistair's saying is up to you. Just as when layering C, M, Y and K, the possibilities are endless.
Since these four prints are better together, we're offering a collection of 24"x30" prints, all four C, M, Y and K, for $3,000. Contact collector@20x200.com for more information about acquiring this special set (and at a steal!).
