20x200 partners with remarkable organizations to bring collectors great art for a great cause. This month, we’re excited to be working with the Magnum Foundation again, this time to release a pair of prints from renowned photographer Inge Morath. Sales of the striking, black and white photographs will benefit Magnum’s Legacy Program, as well as the Inge Morath Foundation.
Sign up for the 20x200 newsletter (here!) to get automatic notification and first dibs on the prints when they are released on November 10th. While the exact images won’t be revealed until then, we’ll share a little bit more about Morath and why we’re so thrilled to be presenting her work.
The limited-edition photographs that will be featured on 20x200 were taken by Morath at the 1955 Bal d’Hiver, a charity ball in Paris. For the big event, European royalty donned spectacular costumes donated by couturiers, including Hubert de Givenchy and Christian Dior, to enact a dance on ice. Morath expertly captured all of the glorious details—of the costumes, and the celebrity guests—giving us all a peek into the realm of the mid-century, European social elite. The pair of prints to be offered on 20x200 feature the most elegant starlet of the evening. Other attendees included an international roster of celebrities, from the Countess d’Paris to film star Charlie Chaplin.
Princess Chavchavadze as Empress Catherine the Great, 1955 by Inge Morath © Inge Morath Foundation/Magnum Photo
Of Morath’s oeuvre, John Jacob—Director of the Magnum Foundation Legacy Program and Director of the Inge Morath Foundation—says, “If a thread can be said to run through her work from beginning to end, it is the marvel of human creativity, which Morath both recorded and exemplified in her photography.”
Inge Morath herself is perhaps best remembered for her intrepid nature. A friend of photographer Ernst Haas, she wrote articles to accompany his photographs and was invited by Robert Capa and Haas to Paris to join the newly founded Magnum agency as an editor. She began photographing in London in 1951, and assisted Henri Cartier-Bresson as a researcher in 1953-54. In 1955, after working for two years as a photographer, she became a Magnum member.
In the following years, Morath traveled extensively in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Her special interest in the arts found expression in photographic essays published by a number of leading magazines. After her marriage to playwright Arthur Miller in 1962, Morath settled in New York and Connecticut. She first visited the USSR in 1965. In 1972 she studied Mandarin and obtained a visa to China, making the first of many trips to the country in 1978.
Morath was at ease anywhere. Some of her most important work consists of portraits, but also of passers-by and celebrities. She was also adept at photographing places: Her pictures of Boris Pasternak's home, Pushkin's library, Chekhov's house, Mao Zedong's bedroom, artists' studios and cemetery memorials are permeated with the spirit of invisible people still present. Inge Morath died in New York City on January 30, 2002.
Upon his wife’s passing, Arthur Miller summed up Morath’s contributions to photography by telling the New York Times, “She made poetry out of people and their places over half a century.”

The Inge Morath Foundation is dedicated to educational programs and traveling exhibitions encompassing Morath’s prolific career, and to providing awards, including an annual $5,000 grant for female photographers under the age of 30.
The Magnum Foundation's Legacy Program is dedicated to preserving, interpreting and making accessible materials related to the history of Magnum Photos, and to the larger history of photography to which Magnum has uniquely contributed.

Announcing Paul Fusco's RFK Funeral Train Prints to Benefit Magnum Foundation
Filed Under: announcements On: May 31, 2011 By:Charlie Fish
Untitled from RFK Funeral Train Rediscovered
[Update: Two limited-edition photographs from Paul Fusco's RFK Funeral Train series, , FUP1968010K003 + FUP1968010K052, are now available, starting at $100. Proceeds benefit the Magnum Foundation's Legacy Program.]
Over the years, we've partnered with some pretty great artists, organizations and institutions to bring our collectors great art in support of a good cause. But we're especially thrilled to announce that we've teamed up with the Magnum Foundation to release two prints from Magnum photographer Paul Fusco's RFK Funeral Train series. Not only will collectors have a chance to own a piece of history, but also (and best of all!), proceeds from the sale of this edition will directly benefit the Magnum Foundation's Legacy Program, dedicated to preserving, interpreting and making accessible materials related to the history of Magnum Photos, and to the larger history of photography to which Magnum has uniquely contributed. The prints (not featured here) will be available on 20x200.com on Wednesday, June 8th, at 2:00 p.m. ET. Newsletter subscribers will have first access to the prints at 11:00 a.m. ET—be the first in line and sign up here.
James Danziger, founder of Danziger Projects, exhibited RFK Funeral Train Rediscovered in 2008, and had this to say about the estimable Magnum Photos and the renowned photographer:
As director of Magnum New York in 2003-2004, getting to know Paul was one of the many privileges of the position. Housing the work of legendary photographers like [Robert] Capa and [Henri] Cartier-Bresson, the depth and quality of the Magnum archive is legendary. Yet for me, nothing was more affecting than Fusco's RFK Funeral Train pictures.
Untitled from RFK Funeral Train Rediscovered
Fusco, a legendary photographer, joined Magnum in 1973, and his body of work surrounds the many social issues that have abounded in the U.S. and around the world in the six decades he's been active. In June 1968, Senator Robert Francis "Bobby" Kennedy was the leading Democratic candidate for the U.S. Presidency. Bobby Kennedy was a beacon of hope and equality during a time of widespread turmoil: the Vietnam war raged on, civil rights riots were rampant and MLK had been assassinated a mere two months prior. His murder—he was shot three times by Sirhan Sirhan after delivering his victory speech—deflated millions of Americans' aspirations for social change and justice.
RFK's body was flown from California to New York, where his Requiem Mass was held at St. Patrick's Cathedral. On June 8, 1968, as his coffin was placed aboard a train bound for Washington, D.C., LOOK magazine instructed Fusco to photograph the events surrounding the funeral and the train ride. The resulting images became the RFK Funeral Train series and documented the thousands upon thousands of mourners and onlookers that waited by train stations, in fields and by tracks, sometimes for hours. As Paul describes, they watched "hope pass by, on a train." The striking documentary images in this series were also included in the Aperture-published Paul Fusco: RFK.

As Cartier-Bresson, one of Magnum's founders, once said, "Magnum is a community of thought, a shared human quality, a curiosity about what is going on in the world, a respect for what is going on and a desire to transcribe it visually." With the release of this pair of prints, the Magnum Foundation and 20x200 collectors are not only engaging in and remembering a seminal moment in U.S. history, but they are also fostering a dialogue about photojournalism's role in changing lives and the human condition.
If you haven't already, sign up for the 20x200 newsletter here to get first access to the prints and for more details about this partnership.

On March 29th, 20x200 became the 99th contributor to the Hearts+Hands raffle to benefit Japan, organized by Satsuma Press owner Lynn Russell. We donated one each of the Joseph Holmes and Emily Shur prints and these—along with the work of a number of other artists, studios and small businesses—will be raffled off to raise money for the earthquake and tsunami victims.
Sales from the 20x200 benefit editions have already generated over $12,000 in donations and we sincerely hope to see those funds go even further through Hearts+Hands.

Left: Imperial Palace Gardens with Wall, Tokyo, 2006 by Emily Shur; Right: Shinjuku, 6:43, 2007 by Joseph O. Holmes
The week before last, 20x200 interrupted its regular line-up to introduce the two new editions, Imperial Palace Gardens with Wall, Tokyo by Emily Shur and Shinjuku, 6:43, by Joseph O. Holmes. All net proceeds of these editions have gone to support the Japan Society's Earthquake Relief Fund. As of Tuesday, March 22, Shur, Holmes, 20x200 and our collectors have raised over $12,000 for the earthquake's victims.
Special thanks to our printer, Eric Recktenwald who donated his time to the cause and to all the other artists and supporters who wanted to get involved. And thanks, as well, to everyone who has helped us to get the word out, including The Diplomat and The Huffington Post.

Cooper-Hewitt Exclusive Offer for 20x200 Collectors
Filed Under: announcements On: December 14, 2010
As you probably read in last week's newsletter, we released The World from iconic artist Paula Scher.
One-third of the proceeds from the sales of the edition benefit Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. As thanks for the support, the organization responded with an exclusive offer for 20x200 collectors. They're giving their $120 dual/family membership to our family and friends for just $99. Follow the link to seal the deal and get free admission to the garden and galleries, special discounts on public programs and more. Start soaking in the benefits of being a member this week at a talk with renowned designer Michael Graves:
Bill’s Design Talk: Michael Graves
Thursday, December 16 | 6:30–8:00 p.m.
2 East 91st Street
From Cooper-Hewitt:
Internationally renowned architect and designer Michael Graves will provide an intimate portrait of his celebrated career and discuss the influences that shaped his thinking and approach to design - from his early days as a student and recipient of the American Academy in Rome's prestigious Prix de Rome to his distinguished academic career at Princeton University; to the development of his firm into a global design enterprise practicing architecture, interiors, product design and graphic design. He will also share the very personal inspirations that led him to challenge many of the arcane ideas that have shaped healthcare design in the past.
Members $10; non-Members $15, Students (with valid ID) are free. Register online at or contact the Education Department at 212.849.8353 or cheducation@si.edu.
Paula is a principal at Pentagram and an absolute inspiration to many of us at 20x200. Her "accidental" start in mapping may have been the result of wanting to keep a $1,000 AIG expenses fee, but her works in permanent collections at the Museum of Modern Art, the Library of Congress and Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum reflect her importance and influence in American art and design.
Cooper-Hewitt has also named Paula a National Design Award Communications Design Finalist.

Create Your 20x200 Account Today!
Filed Under: announcements On: November 18, 2010 By:sara

Hi collectors! If you've been collecting prints from 20x200 for awhile and have made some new purchases recently, there's a small chance that you've been prompted to create a 20x200 account. And if you haven't been yet, you will be, soon. What's this all about!?!
Well, as you know, we're always trying to make collecting art as satisfying as possible. You've also sent us a lot of requests and suggestions for making 20x200 better and we've listened. Creating these accounts is the first step in launching the art collecting experience that we've all been dreaming of—and it's really just the beginning. Over the next few months, we'll be rolling out all kinds of exciting benefits and features for account holders. I can't tell you more right now but you know how much we love surprises around here (and you know our surprises are always good!). So, when you're prompted to, it's a good idea to take a couple seconds and create a 20x200 account. You'll be happy that you did.
For those of you who've jumped on in and created an account (bravo to you!), please drop us a line at support at 20x200 dot com if you have any questions or suggestions.
For the rest of you, here are some answers to the questions that just might be percolating in your heads:
Why can't I just keep using Google Checkout?
Google Checkout served us well, but there are a lot of things we'd like to offer you that we just couldn't do; more on that below.
As we receive feedback from you and continue to enhance and update our new system, Google Checkout will be an option for a couple more months—but not forever—the sooner you create your 20x200 account, the better. If you've saved information with Google, creating your 20x200 account will require a little legwork—we appreciate your efforts in advance!
What do I get when I create a 20x200 account?
The first new thing you'll be able to do with your 20x200 account is to see all of your prints in one place; consider it your personal inventory. This will start with your newest purchases. If you'd like to see all of your prints, send us an email and we can link up your account to transfer that info. Make sure to create your account with the same email address you've always used at 20x200.
Of course, you'll also be able to do a lot of the same things you could with Google Checkout: use a gift certificate or promotional code, save multiple shipping and billing addresses, save billing information and checkout quickly. If you've ever wanted a fast-selling print, you know it can be panic-inducing to see that timer ticking down on your cart. The more info you have saved, the faster you'll be able to checkout, and the more likely you'll be to get the print you want before it sells out. Holiday shopping is stressful enough already, let us make at least one thing easier for you!
There are so many more useful and fun features for account holders in the works. As we roll them out, we'll keep you posted here and in the newsletter.
Do I have to create an account to shop?
No, you don’t have to create a 20x200 account, but having one is the best way to enjoy collecting art on 20x200. And it's only going to get better.
Is the information used to create my account secure?
Yes, absolutely! Your privacy and the security of your account are super important to us. We will not share or sell your personal information, ever. You also have the option to save as much or as little information as you'd like.

This information should get you started, but seriously, if you have questions, concerns or suggestions, just ask! We love hearing from you. Say hi at support at 20x200 dot com.
Spotlight On Shawn Records' Owner of this World
Filed Under: announcements On: November 3, 2010 By:Emma
Untitled, from the series Owner of this World by Shawn Records
Just weeks ago we released a wistful and wonderful edition by Shawn Records, and wanted to take the opportunity to have a closer look at the larger series from which Records' image was gleaned. Shawn's project stands as a poignant meditation on parenthood and on growing up, as well a fascinating behind-the-scenes glimpse of Hollywood and the film industry. Shawn writes of the project:
Owner of This World is a series of photographs made during the four months that my son, Max Records, worked as an actor in Where the Wild Things Are, Spike Jonze's film adaptation of the Maurice Sendak classic. Max was nine-years old at the time, and neither he nor anyone in our family had been involved in the film industry before. Though the majority of these photographs were made behind the scenes, my goals were far more personal than objective. Beyond documenting Hollywood's incongruities, I think of this series more as a manifestation of my own anxieties; a collection of both fears and reassurances, upon letting my son out into a world that's beyond my control.
What's more, this series has been made into book of the same title by the remarkable Portland, OR-based Publication Studio, an "experiment in sustainable publication." They write of their project: "We print and bind books on demand, creating original work with artists and writers we admire, books that both respond to the conversation of the moment and can endure." (Read more about this innovative and outstanding organization here).
More images from the book manifestation of Owner of This World are available on the Publication Studio website—as well as on Shawn's own page. You can order your very own, (custom-printed!) copy of this book here.

AOL Announces 25 for 25 Grant Recipients!
Filed Under: announcements On: October 28, 2010 By:Emma
If there's an idea that we can get behind, it's awarding deserving artists the money to foster new ideas, projects and develop their practice. So, we are thrilled by this morning's announcement of the twenty-five artists AOL has selected for their 25 for 25 grant. For those of you unfamiliar with program, AOL is awarding twenty-five (!) grants of $25,000 (!!) to artists, writers and creative types – as they put it: “the next generation of culture shapers and influencers.”
It’s a project very close to our own hearts; Ms. Jen Bekman served on the esteemed advisory board that reviewed applications along with: Adam D. Weinberg and Chrissie Iles of the Whitney Museum of American Art; Andy Spade of Partners & Spade; Rafael de Cardenas of Architecture at Large; Kim Hastreiter of Paper Magazine; Christian Viveros Faune of The Village Voice and writer Glenn O’Brien.
What’s even more exciting: from the pool of more than 9,000 applicants, five members of the JBP family have been selected to receive grants. Yes, that’s right: Coke O'Neal, Jason Polan, Rachel Sussman, Tema Stauffer, Taj Forer have all been honored with this amazing opportunity that'll help them grow the projects we've long admired. Join us in congratulating Coke, Jason, Rachel, Tema and Taj as well as all the recipients of this grant.
You can take a look at the complete list of arts and selections of their work here. We can't wait to see how this group of creatives puts their grant money to use—and will, of course, keep you posted.
Hooray for Jennifer Sanchez + Art Toronto 2010!

ny.10.#36, 2010 by Jennifer Sanchez
We’re super-duper excited for Jennifer Sanchez for a number of reasons—for one, she’s among the latest participants in the prestigious (and awesome) AIM (Artist in the Marketplace) program, run by The Bronx Museum. For those unfamiliar with AIM, it’s a thirteen-week seminar series (which accepts only eighteen applicants for each session—Clare Grill was a past selectee), that helps to provide emerging NYC-area artists with various opportunities for professional development. From their website:
AIM sessions provide information, instruction, and professional guidance by addressing areas of practical concern to artists, such as curatorial practice, copyright law, exhibition and public art opportunities, gallery representation, grants writing, income taxes, and marketing.
The program concludes with a group show featuring work by all of the participating artists, as well as an accompanying publication (keep your eyes peeled for more info on these in the coming months).
What’s more, Jennifer will also have work on view at the Toronto International Art Fair this month (brought to us by the same people responsible for NYC's Armory Show). In addition to featuring artwork in gallery-run booths, the fair has a number of special events that are well worth checking out if you find yourself in the GTA between October 28th and November 1st. Just a few highlights:
Go here for a complete run-down of the fair's special events, and don't forget to stop by the Parts Gallery booth for a look at Jennifer's featured pieces.

Happy 3rd Birthday, 20x200! + $3 Flat Rate Shipping
Filed Under: announcements On: September 5, 2010 By:sara
Hip, hip, hooray! 20x200 turns three today! It seems like just yesterday we were celebrating birthday numero uno and now... here we are two years later. Where, oh where does the time go?
Way back then, we were reveling in our first 120 editions created with 84 artists; today, we couldn't be more proud to commemorate the 203 artists we've worked with to create 451 editions. As in Landon Nordeman's Nice Pants, that "good things come in threes" has proven to be true (in spite of our affection for the number two). What a wonderful year it's been! We're looking forward to many more years of working with great artists to present great art to you.
We hope you'll join us with whoops and hollers for our $3 flat rate shipping offer on 8"x10" and 11"x14" prints through this long weekend only. We broke the news on Wednesday but think it's worth repeating as a reminder:
Three cheers as this kind of offer only happens very occasionally, and rarely before the holidays. Consider this our early gift to you: pick up a peck of prints now and start ticking off your gift list. With all that you'll be saving—S&H usually starts at $8.50—you can afford to do a little, "one for me, one for you" and still feel generous and virtuous too.
* The rate is applied per size for a maximum shipping and handling charge of $6. Special rate can only be applied to orders within the U.S. and does not apply to international orders.
Hey, Hot Shot! 2010: Grand Prize Now $10K! + Deadline Extension: Tuesday, August 31st
Filed Under: announcements On: August 24, 2010 By:youngna
Untitled (Santa Barbara) from the series California Vernacular by 2010 contender Liz Kuball
You may have already read the news over on the Hey, Hot Shot! blog, but we wanted to make sure all of you photographers who are reading this blog know that we've increased the HHS! Competition Grand Prize to $10,000 and are extending the deadline to Tuesday, August 31st at 8:00 p.m. (EDT).
From the HHS! blog:
As part of this community, you are well aware of how hard we work at creating opportunities for artists and spreading the word about the competition. The good news is—it's working! After we announced that we were teaming up with Blurb to offer each Hot Shot the chance to produce their own book a few weeks ago, a buzz of excitement percolated 'round the web, and created quite a stir.
We're happy to hear that you're excited—all the energy is bringing new photographers into our community at this eleventh hour. We want to share the love, welcome this new community around us, and give them—and you—a little more time to get your entries in, which is why we're doubling the Grand Prize to $10,000 and extending the deadline to August 31st.
Jen has always wanted the prize to be as big as it can be, and though we were happy to offer you $5,000, we're ecstatic to offer to $10,000. Over the last 5 months, we'd been wracking our brains to figure out how to bolster this amount. We considered working with other companies to increase the prize, but in the end, dug deep within JBP to offer you an amount that we think can make a real, positive change on the possibilities for an artist.
For those of you who have already applied: thank you! The panelists have begun to review your entries and we at JBP are perusing your images and lining up a few more weeks of contenders to feature on our blog. We've featured over 90 this year, and the range of work has been incredible: keep it coming!
If you have any questions make sure to check our Hey, Hot Shot! FAQ, which we've been updating with your questions as we go. If your question hasn't been answered, send us a Direct Message on Twitter to @heyhotshot or an email to hey@heyhotshot.com and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.
Remember, the only way to submit your photos for consideration to 20x200 is through HHS! We've discovered many 20x200 artists there over the years and love forming relationships with photographers who we get to work with across all of the programs at JBP.
Wednesday Edition: Eirik Johnson

Behind the Bay City Log Sorting Yard, Cosmopolis, Washington by Eirik Johnson
Good day collectors, it's Sara again. Jen's been fighting off a flu of sorts that seems to be taking one 20x200-er down at a time. She'll be back soon, I promise. In the meantime, I have a new photograph from an artist we've long admired from afar.
I was first drawn to Eirik Johnson's photography, and in particular, the body of work that Behind the Bay City Log Sorting Yard, Cosmopolis, Washington comes from—and which is also a book, titled Sawdust Mountain—because it was warmly familiar. No where else have I lived are the culture and economy so entwined with and dependent on natural resources as in the Pacific Northwest. Timber and salmon define the region as much as the Chrysler and Empire State buildings distinguish New York's skyline. No where else are these relationships so visible.
On any venture outside of the small port cities that dot Washington's waterfronts, you will inevitably meet a truck over-loaded and tipsy with felled timber and see acres of stumps supplanted with new saplings. BBQs are nearly never absent of salmon and heading upriver to witness the spawning season is a right of passage. My alma mater maintains The Logger as our mascot, as we are generously supported by funds from a corporate champion of "innovative forest products." The blue-turning-white collar town that the campus is nestled in is occasionally graced by the peculiar aroma of the pulp plants that reside along the industrial tide flats.
Johnson's photographs acknowledge these connections—and further, make them visceral. In Behind the Bay City Log Sorting Yard, Cosmopolis, Washington, a single-family home is ceaselessly blasted by the floodlights of the lumber yard, literally casting an eerie glow on what it would be like to live here and to hear the constant hum and buzz of chopping and sorting. Two towering trees, on the right, oppose dozens of their kind, defiled in piles on the left. Without these little hints, this image could have been taken anywhere else that industry has invaded remote, rural or domestic corners. Other evidence is less specific: calla lilies and a kiddie swimming pool abut the house, implying a defiant sweetness of the family that lives here. The grass appears bone-dry as if the light has leached the life from it. As in Johnson's other photographs, the lush colors are unsettlingly seductive.
To see more of the work, pick up a copy of Sawdust Mountain from Aperture. They're in the midst of a summer sale; the $50 price tag has been slashed to a steal of $35, for a limited time (much of their inventory is 30% off). I do recommend you get one to accompany your print. (If you had submitted your work to JBP's Hey, Hot Shot! photography competition by now, you would have been in the running to win a slew of books donated by HHS! panelist Lesley Martin from Aperture, including Eirik's. It's not too late to enter now though, see the competition site for more details; the opportunities for photographers are unparalleled!)
The pages of Sawdust Mountain are matte and muted, much like the water-infused light that soaks the Northwest. (Our print, like Eirik's other prints has a warm, luster surface.) The edges of the cover and back are left unbound, exposing the pulpy skeleton of the book. Holding this object is a light reminder that we are all, everywhere else, somewhat complicit in the taking of the trees that grace the cover. Just what we are able to do about it is the question that remains unanswered.

Hey, Hot Shot! + 20x200 artists: Two Things That Go Great Together
Filed Under: announcements On: March 25, 2010 By:Stacy Oborn
Fourth of July #2, Independence, Missouri by Mike Sinclair
If you are a photographer and follower or collector of 20x200, did you know that the only way to submit your images to be considered for an edition is through the Hey Hot Shot! photo competition? Carlo Van de Roer, Gregory Krum, Mike Sinclair and Colleen Plumb all first graced us with their presence through their entries in HHS! prior to selling out their editions in 20x200. There are also a plethora of other opportunities afforded by entering the competition: online exposure, automatic entry to win one of the competition's Curator's Choice Awards, and a chance at this year's Grand Prize of $5,000 and two years of gallery representation. So on that note, we want to let you know that the HHS! 2010 competition is now underway!
The deadline for submissions is August 22, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. (EDT).
Since its inception in 2005, Hey, Hot Shot!, the premier international photography competition, has provided one hundred and twenty-nine photographers from all over the world with unrivaled exposure, support and recognition. This year marks the 5th anniversary of the competition and the 7th anniversary of Jen Bekman Gallery. In celebration, we are introducing even more incredible opportunities for every contender.
In addition to the hallmark awards of past competitions, this year we are offering a $5,000 honorarium and five Curator's Choice Awards.
![]()
A diverse panel of photography professionals--including founder Jen Bekman, Aperture Foundation publisher Lesley A. Martin, Chronicle Books chairman and CEO Nion McEvoy, a founding editor of Radius Books Darius Himes and photographer Kent Rogowski--reviews every entry.
This season, we are thrilled to welcome Tod Lippy, editor-in-chief of Esopus magazine and president of the Esopus Foundation Ltd., to our panel. Tod served as a senior editor at Print magazine from 1990 to 1997, is an award-winning filmmaker and also a frequent lecturer on topics ranging from screenwriting to graphic design.
Our panel will select five photographers as the 2010 Hot Shots. Each photographer will be awarded:
+ A $500 honorarium.
+ Participation in the 2010 Hot Shot Exhibition at Jen Bekman Gallery.
+ The opportunity to release an edition on 20x200.
Jen Bekman will select one of the five 2010 Hot Shots for the Grand Prize and announce the recipient on March 15, 2011. In addition to the honors as a Hot Shot, the grand prize recipient will be awarded:
+ A $5,000 honorarium to support a personal project.
+ A solo exhibition at Jen Bekman Gallery.
+ Representation from Jen Bekman Gallery for two years, commencing with his/her selection.
All entrants are reviewed for participation in 20x200; entering the competition is the only way for photographers to have their work considered for an edition. In addition, we will feature one contender each weekday during the competition on the Hey, Hot Shot! blog. Every contender receives ample opportunity for online exposure through our blog and on Facebook, Flickr and Twitter, where HHS! has thousands of fans and followers and serves as a leading voice in the dialogue about contemporary photography.
Ever looking to expand contenders' opportunities for recognition, each month, a guest curator will choose a photographer from those who have applied todate for a Curator's Choice Award. This contender will be featured in a Hey, Hot Shot! newsletter and awarded a prize from the curator's affiliate organization.
Darius Himes, a founding editor of Radius Books, will be the first month's guest curator! All submissions made before April 22nd, 2010 are automatically eligible to win a gift bag from Radius, including three outstanding monographs:
Transfigurations by Michael Lundgren
The Spirit and the Flesh by Debbie Fleming Cafferty
Domestic Vacations by Julie Blackmon.
The photographer Darius selects will be notified by email and featured on the blog and in the newsletter.
The guidelines are simple: submit five photographs from a single body of work, using our online upload tool, with an entry fee starting at $60.
The entry fee will increase throughout the competition, so don't delay: Apply now!

This Summer: Starn Twins on The Roof at The Met Museum
Filed Under: announcements On: February 16, 2010 By:casey
Digital rendering of Doug and Mike Starn’s “Big Bambú,” a site-specific sculpture made of 3,200 interlocking bamboo poles lashed together with nylon rope. (image: NYT)
This summer The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York will turn over its rooftop to 20x200 edition-makers Mike and Doug Starn, who will be lashing together a 50-foot-high installation called Big Bambú. Visitors will be allowed to climb through the organically formed network of bamboo poles on guided tours led by the museum.

The Starns have been working on Big Bambú with a team of 15 rock climbers since 2008, building and evolving the structure in their Beacon, NY warehouse.
They write:
At its pinnacle, the continually evolving architecture being built from within (no outside scaffolding or support) will cantilever out as far as the bamboo poles network allows, and then will bridge down to the floor. At this point the first tower will be dismantled pole by pole and carried through the structure and down to create another monumental tower and then on again, walking down the 320 feet space, almost like a Slinky and then back again. Big Bambú will evolve through the continuous rebuilding and rethinking of the structure at all times.
The performative aspect of Big Bambú's never ending construction process is why this artwork defies categorization, falling somewhere between sculpture, architecture and performance. More details on the construction and installation of the piece can be found in this New York Times article.

Big Bambú is just one piece in a stellar history of work by the Starn Twins. They've also created an award-winning subway installation in New York, completed countless print and book projects and more ephemeral installations.
They've also released four art and photography editions with 20x200. In fact, celebrity stylist Robert Verdi recently told New York Magazine that he has a Starn print hanging above his bed. Historically, our Starn editions have sold out instantly, but select prints from their newer editions are available below.
Congratulations to the Starns and to The Met on this amazing partnership. We'll see you up top this summer!

Introducing Stacy Oborn!
Filed Under: announcements On: February 16, 2010 By:youngna

Greetings, dear blog readers! You may have noticed a new blogger around these parts during the last few weeks, sharing her thoughts about JBP artists and myriad other ideas and ongoings in the art world. We are pleased to announce that Stacy Oborn (the tyke to the right in the photo to your left)— writer, photographer, expert in the world of birds and good friend-of-JBP will be contributing frequent updates to the 20x200, Hey, Hot Shot! and Jen Bekman Gallery blogs. We're very excited to have her join our crew and hope you are too!
A bit more about Stacy:
Stacy Oborn is a writer/editor and photographer living in Ithaca (is gorges!), New York. She doesn't quite remember when or under what circumstances her first brush with Jen Bekman Projects was, but her Google Checkout purchase history tells her that she's been collecting work from 20x200 quite enthusiastically since October 2008. Her first purchase? Jason Polan's 132 Birds at the Museum of Natural History. Fitting too, since she is currently employed by the biggest bird lab in the world. When not writing at JBP, she can also be read in a more unexpurgated fashion, at her site the space in between.
Keep your eye on our internet-spaces for more from Stacy, and join us in welcoming her to our team.

Help Sara Raise $5k for Young Adults with Cancer
Filed Under: announcements On: February 8, 2010 By:casey
Sara Distin, Associate Director of Jen Bekman Projects, is training for her first-ever marathon.
Dear Collectors and Friends of 20x200,
We interrupt our regularly scheduled programming to bring you an important announcement. Ms. Sara Distin, the amazing Associate Director of JBP, is running her first-ever marathon this April in memory of her dad and in support of First Descents, a non-profit organization that provides guidance and instruction for outdoor adventure activities for young adults (ages 18-39) with cancer. We ask for your support in reaching her fundraising goal of $5,000.
Sara writes:
Survival rates for this demographic haven't improved much in the last 30 years and there aren't many support systems available to those patients who seek it, making the efforts of FD invaluable. The experiences that First Descents offers promote emotional, psychological and physical strength and healing. Participants also meet a community of fellow patients and survivors, a potential network of support that sustains long after the week of camp is over.
With the money that Sara hopes to raise, five cancer survivors will be given the incredible opportunity to spend one week at a FD program. As of this writing, she has reached 33% of her total goal, but with your support we think that she can not only reach her goal, but double it!
On a typical day at JBP HQ, you will find Sara corresponding with our artists and edition-makers, working with Ms. Jen B. to curate 20x200, and making sure that every color of every print is absolutely perfect. Before or after work, Sara has been hitting the streets to cover "350+ training miles in Brooklyn, running over bridges and along rivers, in snow, sleet, wind and rain, or worse, the gym."
You can donate, in any amount, by clicking here.
Whether or not you are able to make a donation, we encourage you to learn more about First Descents and to read Sara's moving letter to friends and family, which has the full story behind her marathon.
Thank you for your support.

We're all looking forward to a few days of R+R as we head home to our own families and friends but first want to remind you of all the great art that has been dancing like sugarplums through your inboxes. Last Day of Festivus: 20% off Today + Starn Twins Tomorrow!
Filed Under: announcements On: December 16, 2009 By:youngna
Flush-with-excitement Festivus greetings, collector friends! Yes, it's me again, here to wrap up our twelve-day extravaganza and give you -- our super-special-est list-subscribing collectors -- advance notice of our spectacular season finale plans. On deck for today: 20% off orders of $200 or more! For tomorrow: a fresh edition from the world-renowned and 20x200-beloved Doug + Mike Starn.
Our newsletter announcing the work will hit your inbox at 11 a.m., a full hour before it's unveiled to the whole wide world on the 20x200 homepage at high noon. (One quick note before I delve into the details: we've been very busy elves here at JBP HQ, so our newsletters haven't always gone out on time, but rest assured: tomorrow will run like clockwork.) The deliriously gorgeous prints we're releasing are sure to be a smash with our collectors. The editions we released from them in 2007, Structure of Thought 6-a and 6-b, remain our most talked about prints to this day, and for good reason. They're incredibly special and there's literally not a day that goes by where I don't take a moment or two to admire the set that hangs in my apartment.
Those prints also sold out in (literally) minutes, which makes tomorrow's advance notice to list subscribers critical for collectors. Support 20x200 Artists Online!
Filed Under: announcements On: December 14, 2009 By:casey
One of the very best ways to support emerging artists is to collect their work, but there are other ways you can help too, like spreading the word! Let's all take two minutes to vote for edition-maker Carrie Marril.
A Dream World Glimmers In The Background Of The Soul by Carrie Marill
Carrie is competing to win a $10,000 grant and have her work added to the prestigious West Collection. To bring her work to the top of the judges' list, make sure to visit her page and give her five stars.
West Forty-third Street (Yellow Cabs) by Joseph O. Holmes
Manhattan Users Guide, a website and e-newsletter that has long syndicated the daily photographs of edition-maker Joe Holmes, is up for a Mashable Open Web Award. To vote for MUG and Joe head over to Mashable, sign in with Twitter or Facebook, and select "Manhattan Users Guide" from the drop-down menu. Voting has closed! Best of luck to MUG!

All this is especially relevant because last week, Jen tweeted a link to a pretty upsetting survey:
A vast majority of Americans, 96%, said they were greatly inspired by various kinds of art and highly value art in their lives and communities. But the data suggests a strange paradox. While Americans value art, the end product, they do not value what artists do. Only 27% of respondents believe that artists contribute "a lot" to the good of society.
"This is the thing we're trying to fix at 20x200," wrote Jen. And I think that I speak for everyone at 20x200 when I say that the most rewarding part of working here is helping to support all these amazing artists and bring their work to collectors like you!
Jorge Colombo Gets a Silver Medal and Does Ballet
Filed Under: announcements On: December 9, 2009 By:casey

Our very own iPhone sketcher Jorge Colombo, whose eight 20x200 editions have become instant classics, recently placed second in TIME Magazine's top 10 magazine covers of the year!
Of Jorge's iconic New Yorker cover, Arthur Hochstein writes,
No homage here — this cover is a true original. New Yorker covers are often topical, and they are known for their wit and keen cultural timing. But several times a year, they just run covers that capture the New York–ness of America's greatest city. This cover found a groundbreaking way to do that, featuring a piece by illustrator-designer Jorge Colombo that was created on an iPhone applicaton called Brushes. If it had been done just for novelty's sake, it would be noteworthy but not significant. But this illustration meets the impeccable standards of New Yorker covers — an accomplishment in any medium.
But that's not all! After a year spent drawing city landscapes for 20x200 and for The New Yorker, Jorge will be embarking on a new project: creating digital sets for an Off-Broadway ballet called Nutcracker: Rated R on his iPhone. "It's the first time I have done this kind of thing," he writes. "My projected images will dance along with the performers, and I can only hope it all works out -- the whole process is being created from scratch." We're crossing our fingers for Jorge here at 20x200!
Tickets to Nutcracker: Rated R, which opens on December 17th, are going to sell out fast so head over to Jorge's site to reserve yours today.

Time is like the East River by William Lamson
Artist William Lamson will open a solo show this Thursday, November 12 from 6-8 p.m. at Connecticut's Artspace. Lamson's exhibition will compliment his installation, Long Shot, which is currently on view in The Lot space outside of the gallery building.
From the press release:
Equal parts director and performer, Lamson explores oppositional forces and ideas through his actions and interventions, which he documents in still photographs and short videos. His performative experiments reveal tensions between success and failure, stability and instability, and strength and weakness, while speaking broadly to notions of temporality and interconnectivity. In his straightforward yet multi-layered works, Lamson marshals the principles of action and reaction to challenge viewers’ perceptions of gravity or basketball, for example, in order to create new moments for discovery.
The show will remain on view through December 19th.

Stuart Klipper's new book has a slipcase that was crafted from salvaged New Orleans heart pine.
Minneapolis-based panoramic photographer, Stuart Klipper, has published a book with The Press at Colorado College, A City as Once Seen, of images he made while on multiple visits to the city of New Orleans. The book features twenty-seven, new panoramic photographs.
From the press release:
This book, with its images and texts, stands as a reminder of the importance of a city that has long quickened the pulse of America’s heartbeat and added spice to the American soul.Five of the photographs are paired with texts. Stuart enlisted five of his friends, all New Orleans-based writers to involve themselves in the project that preceded and prompted this book. Each was asked to select and in turn respond in writing to one of the 27 images. The book is structured so that each of these outstanding original vignettes counterpoint the photographs that inspired them.
A City as Once Seen: Photographs by Stuart Klipper has been printed in an edition of 40, and is expected to sell out soon, so if you are interested please call or email The Press at Colorado College to claim your copy today.

A portion of the proceeds from the book will be donated to relief and rebuilding efforts in New Orleans.
Stuart's editions Icebreaker, Emperor penguin, Southern O., Antarctica and Swell, Southern Ocean near 50 S, Antarctica are still available in all three print sizes.

Cover illustration of The Wild Things by Rachell Sumpter
20x200 star Rachell Sumpter was chosen to illustrate the cover of the soon-to-be hipster classic The Wild Things by Dave Eggers. The Wild Things is based on the screenplay that Eggers co-wrote with Spike Jonze for the film Where The Wild Things Are, which you've probably seen and have strong feelings about, unless of course, you've been off the grid for the past two weeks.
20x200 edition prints by Rachell are in dwindling supply. Of her two editions, Grande Finale and Cave Dwellers, only 13 remain!

Only Nine Days Left to Help Kevin Cyr Build CAMPER KART!
Filed Under: announcements On: October 23, 2009 By:sara

There are just nine days left to help 20x200 artist Kevin Cyr launch his project to build a Camper Kart through Kickstarter! It all started last year on a trip to Beijing, where Kevin discovered the beauty of a Chinese 3-wheeled flatbed bike. His lifelong interest in RVs and vans led him to create the Camper Bike, a functioning sculptural piece that combines a flatbed bike topped with an American cabover-style camper.
With your help, Kevin hopes to finish the Camper Kart, a mobile unit built into a shopping cart which conveniently accommodates and transports the individual. Check out more information about his and other artists' projects at Kickstarter, a new communal way to support and fund ideas through the web.
If you support Kevin with a pledge of $40 or more on Kickstarter, you'll receive one of his ten artist proofs from his sold out 8"x10" 20x200 edition of Berry. There are a few more 16"x20" and two 30"x40" prints remaining here. –Jacqueline Frole

What print should I buy from 20x200.com? - make thousands more decisions on Hunch.com
Choosing your next 20x200 print just got a whole lot easier. Thanks to our friends at Hunch we were able to build a quiz called "Which print should I buy from 20x200?" with 8 easy-to-answer questions that'll help you surmount those hours of indecision you've likely spent pouring over the site trying to select a print. (Though you are still more than welcome to comb the site for treasures!).
Take the quiz and if you sign up for Hunch you can also give us feedback on the results. Didn't like the print it suggested? Let the quiz know. Hunch will be more accurate the more it's used!
And, what is Hunch you ask? In their own words:
Hunch is a decision-making tool that gets smarter the more you use it. After asking you 10 questions or less, Hunch will provide a concrete result for decisions of every kind.
While you're over at Hunch taking our quiz, poke around the site for help answering all those other plaguing questions in your life. For instance, thanks to this quiz on Hunch, I already know what homemade holiday ornament I will be making this season.

Brian Ulrich In Time Out Chicago

Chicago Place Mall by Brian Ulrich
So far, 2009 has been an exceptional year for photographer Brian Ulrich. Images from his Dark Stores series are included in this month's photography issue of Time Out Chicago. The editors of the issue sought out photographers who captured how Chicagoans are managing the economic decline. Of his work, Brian reflects, "I was born in ’71, and when I was growing up, there was never any thought that these places wouldn’t be sustainable. A tremendous nostalgia has built up around retail culture... I think it’s hard to let go of, for a lot of people."
See the Time Out feature here.
Earlier this year, Brian was a Guggenheim Fellowship winner, showed at Julie Saul Gallery and CEPA Gallery. Brian was also in the most recent JBG group exhibition, Summer Reading, which closed this past weekend.
Currently his work is on view at Yancey Richardson, in the group exhibition, Glitz & Grime: Photographs of Times Square. The exhibition will continue through September 12.

HHS! 2009 Second Edition Competition is OPEN!

Jen Bekman Projects is happy to announce the opening of the 2009 Second Edition Hey, Hot Shot! competition.
Entries will be accepted now through Friday, October 23rd, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. EDT.
The premier international photography competition, Hey, Hot Shot! offers photographers at all stages of their careers unrivaled opportunities for exposure and advancement.
All entrants have their work reviewed by top-shelf panelists and enjoy the potential to be promoted online (more than sixty were featured on the Hey, Hot Shot! blog last season alone!), selected for 20x200 (HHS! is the only way we review photography for 20x200) and exhibited in our New York gallery. Now in its fifth year, the competition has been acclaimed by curators, critics, educators and journalists alike.
A panel of seasoned photography professionals—including founder Jen Bekman, photography book evangelist and publisher Darius Himes, Aperture Foundation publisher Lesley A. Martin, former Creative Director of Colors magazine and photographer Stefan Ruiz and Chronicle Books chairman and CEO Nion McEvoy—review all the photographs that are entered.
The guidelines are simple: contenders submit three photographs from a single body of work, using an online upload tool, with an entry fee of $60. The 2009 Second Edition will add new features and more benefits for all entrants—among the many reasons why Hey, Hot Shot! remains one of the most desirable photography competitions around. Stay tuned for details!
So what are you waiting for? Get your work out there: Apply Now!
We only accept submissions online.
The deadline for entries is Friday, October 23, 2009 @ 8pm EDT.
Hot Shots will be announced on Monday, November 30, 2009.
There is a $60 handling fee for your entry.

The Starn's Big Bambú opens to the public

Image of Big Bambú from November 17th, 2008
Happy Friday, collectors!
Last March Mike + Doug Starn showed images and a video of Big Bambú, "a massive, moving construction made out of countless bamboo poles that is in constant transformation," at the Armory Show. Since the structure doesn't lend itself to easy transport, VernissageTV recently interviewed the duo inside the colossus. Watch the video here, or beneath.
If the video isn't enough, and you're able to make it to Beacon, New York, consider dropping by the Starns' studio for a closer inspection. Viewing hours are from 11am to 4pm on July 25, and August 8 + 22. Admission is free and open to all.

Wednesday Edition: Lisa Congdon

Owl No. 1 by Lisa Congdon

Birch Forest No. 7 by Lisa Congdon
Wednesday Editions: Lisa Congdon + 30% off at Chronicle Books
Bright and sunny summery greetings collectors! It's Sara, pinch-hitting for Jen as she prepares for tonight's opening of Summer Reading at the gallery and her West Coast sojourn. Eventually, she'll find her way to San Francisco, the home of today's edition-maker, Lisa Congdon.
Owl No. 1 and Birch Forest No. 7 are both from Lisa's recently opened show, Little Pink Houses. Lisa co-conspired with friend and fellow artist Mati McDonough to create a series of original paintings and birdhouses inspired by their mutual love of the color pink and the John Mellencamp ode. Among Lisa's new works are the two paintings featured here. The originals were snatched up on opening night, leaving these fine print editions—lovely evidence of a lively imagination and appreciation for all things great and small—the only remaining options to bring a little bit of Lisa's vibrant and cheery world into your own home.
Finding and sharing sweet things great and small is among Lisa's many talents. We were all awed by Rare Device on our visit last spring. Founded by Rena Tom, Lisa joined as a partner in crime; the two manage to seek out seriously gorgeous stuff, tempting the thrifty among us to splurge on porcelain tumblers and this funky East/West tote (it's still on sale!).
If you're a deal-seeker, you've found the right place; we've paired up with our friends at Chronicle Books again to bring 20x200 collectors an insiders' sale. Enter coupon code 20x200 at checkout at Chronicle's online store and get 30% off your entire order + FREE ground shipping! Or, if you're lucky enough to live in the Bay Area, swing by the store and mention Lisa's editions on 20x200 and you'll also receive 30% off your purchase. Opt to pick-up one of Lisa's Birch Forest Flexi Journals and Kevin at Chronicle will also throw in a card from Lisa's Le Foret Eco-Keepsake set. Pair up a Birch Forest No.7 print with a Birch Forest journal for yourself or send off an Owl No.1 with a charming card as a gift.
Also worth checking out is this weekend's Renegade Craft Fair in San Francisco. Lisa will be there and in good company for certain. Among the highlights for fine friends will be a raffle for Faythe Levine's book, Handmade Nation: The Rise of DIY, Art, Craft, and Design and admission is free! So why not check it out? Levine's book is chock-full of illustrations from our very own Kate Bingaman-Burt (who is also included in Summer Reading) and we just might have a few other 20x200 + Handmade Nation surprises up our sleeves. Stay tuned for details.
Far from the left coast? Get your Congdon dose on the interwebs. Little Pink Houses at SF's Curiosity Shoppe is making the rounds and great installation shots abound. I'd make a first stop at My Love for You, then go to Poppytalk, to see what I'm talking about. Lisa's also recently launched a new blog, The Adventures of Lisa and Wilfredo with her four-legged furry friend.
New Yorkers and visitors alike, we hope to see you tonight at the opening for Summer Reading. Find us at 6 Spring Street (between Elizabeth and the Bowery) this evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. toasting all things text-related!

TGIF, collectors! Today I'm happy to let you know that 20x200 was selected to be on All Day Buffet's The New York 100. This list aligns 20x200 with other "innovative, rule- breaking, model-changing" idea makers in the Big Apple. 20x200 tops the Art & Design list, and just a glance at the index proves us to be in well-heeled company.
In a city of millions, it feels good to breathe in the rarefied air of a Top 100er. Thank you, collectors, for making 20x200 what we are. Come join us and the rest of the crème de la crème in celebrating with a "P-Diddy style throw down" in September.

Christian Chaize: Online + In Person

Praia Piquinia 02/08/07 15h16 by Christian Chaize

Praia Piquinia 04/08/07 16h04 by Christian Chaize
Wednesday greetings, collector friends! As I just said on The Twitter, I'm wearing a striped sailor shirt and chomping on a buttery croissant from the newish cafe around the corner, which has got me feeling all "Vive La France!" on this dreary (again, oh woe!) almost-summer day. I've also got a certain French photographer on my mind — our very own Christian Chaize! As reported here, he recently made his solo debut in New York City and I'm very pleased and proud to have 9 gigantic prints of his utterly gorgeous photographs hanging on the walls of Jen Bekman Gallery.
Many 20x200 collectors were hip to Christian's work long before Praia Piquinia made its way to our shores. They read all about it back in February, when I introduced his two exclusive 20x200 editions: Praia Piquinia 02/08/07 15h16 and Praia Piquinia 04/08/07 16h04. We've had lots of new collectors join us since then, so it seemed like a good idea to re-introduce Christian's editions here, especially because I've got so much great exhibition-related stuff to share along with them!
First off, have a look at the installation shots of the exhibition, taken by the extremely over-qualified Joseph O. Holmes. Also, be sure to check out the sweet, sweet video Christian created while he was here in New York for the show. It's almost like being here, which is great for those of you collecting from afar, but for the New Yorkers among you: it ain't nothing like the real thing!
The gallery is quite the oasis these days, so you should really stop by and see for yourself — we're located at 6 Spring Street, between Elizabeth & Bowery. We're open Wednesday through Saturday, from noon to 6 p.m., and are often there otherwise, so don't be shy about calling to arrange an appointment.
The prints in the exhibition measure an impressive 44" x 37"; in the context of the art world at large, their $3500 price is on the affordable end, especially since the editions are small.* Still and all, that's a lot of money for most people and not everyone's got room for prints with such presence. I'm happy that we're able to offer smaller, more affordable prints here. The 14" x 11" prints are quite lovely, especially as a pair, and the 24" x 20" editions make a huge impact in a smaller space. For collectors looking for a print close to the scale of those in the exhibition, we've got one 40" x 30" print remaining on 20x200 that's really quite a steal. In other words, there's art for everyone, which is exactly what we're all about!
Also, if you've got prints that need framing — and I know for a fact that lots of you do — bring them along! We're awfully experienced with framing and have lots of great resources. Jeffrey Teuton, the gallery's Associate Director, will be happy to help you frame your artwork beautifully and affordably.
With all these prints presented for you to ponder, I'm going to take my leave for today, but I'm back once more this week. Be on the lookout for an unusually early dispatch from me tomorrow — we're cooking up a little something special for y'all and I'll share the details with you then.
*We also have a very limited selection of images which are available as 88" x 68" prints — they're absolutely stunning at this size, but obviously high ceilings are a prerequisite!
Photo News from Hey, Hot Shot!
Filed Under: announcements On: June 4, 2009 By:youngna

Thursday greetings, collectors! It might be a bit of surprise to have me pop up in your inbox like this, but I'd be remiss if I didn't share with you the excitement brewing in other provinces of JBP-land. In honor of the day's goings-on, we're featuring editions from a few of our favorite photographers, all of whom happen to be Hot Shots.
As you all know, the photographers that we meet via Hey, Hot Shot! are an important part of our family — they exhibit at the gallery, they've released lots of amazing editions right here on 20x200 and several of them have become dear friends and coworkers. Did you know that Youngna and Raul are both Hot Shots? I think that's pretty cool!
It's not just the photographers of Hey, Hot Shot! that make it great — the panelists are mighty special as well. They're all distinguished in their fields, of course, but what's most impressive to me is their commitment to evaluating all the great work that gets submitted to the competition. And evaluate they did, as did Sara and I, into the wee hours of last night, all in preparation for today's announcement of the first round of Hot Shots for 2009. Please join me in congratulating them!
Michelle Arcila
Daniel Cheek
Mike Sinclair
Parsley Steinweiss
Kurt Tong
Now that they've received the news, they'll be prepping for a group show at the gallery that's slated to open in September and planning editions for 20x200 as well. I'm looking forward to working with them all and I'm especially excited about releasing editions by them.
As we've been working on revising how people browse prints on the site, we've spent a lot of time thinking about how to categorize what we have available. The Hot Shot category is probably one of my favorites; it's incredible to see all those images on a single page — we've met a lot of amazing, talented people via Hey, Hot Shot! You should take some time to get to know them — and their work — too. Have a look at the blog post Sara and Kika just put together which features all the Hot Shots who've done 20x200 editions, and of course if you haven't added the Hey, Hot Shot! blog to your feed reader, there's no time like the present!

Greg Lindquist's Hypothetical Landscapes

Embers of the Maritime by Greg Lindquist
20x200 painter Greg Lindquist has curated a show, Hypothetical Landscapes, which opens tomorrow, May 1, at Janet Kurnatowski Gallery in Brooklyn.
From the press release:
The eight contemporary artists in this exhibition work in abstract modes while referring to natural or humanmade forms in the landscape. While these relationships are apparent in each of the artists’ work—some appearing more conceptually supposed than visually evident—they create a hypothetical proposition between abstraction and landscape. To order his or her pictorial reality, each artist utilizes an organizing structure—a lattice, grid, mesh or framework—from natural forms found in the landscape.

If you're saavy, you'll spy 20x200 art in the display, including:
an original drawing by Jane and Jason Polan from Thrilla in Manila,
Jason Polan's Rocks at the American Museum of Natural History,
Jane's 132 Birds Leaving AMNH (Response to Jason Polan), and
Clifton Burt's think-make-think.
See the window for yourself until January 29th at Bloomingdale's flagship store here in New York, on Lexington Ave between 59th & 60th Streets.
Jen Bekman's heading south: SXSW, that is!
Filed Under: announcements On: January 22, 2009 By:sara

Back in August we asked you all to go check out SXSW's Interactive Panel Picker and vote on a panel put together by our very own Ms. Bekman. Votes have been counted and decisions made and Jen's panel, Curating the Crowd-Sourced World is almost ready for, well, the crowds at SXSW Interactive '09. Joining her on the stage to spill smarts about crowd-sourcing vs. curation are some pretty amazing people:
Dustin Hostetler (aka UPSO), Special Projects Curator, Threadless
Paddy Johnson, Editor, Art Fag City
Nion McEvoy, Chairman/President of Chronicle Books, CEO/Owner Spin Magazine, Chairman/CEO The McEvoy Group
and
Gina Trapani, Founding Editor, Lifehacker
What's the panel all about? Jen writes:
With all the stuff we weed through online, good filters are crucial. Who's best-suited to determine what's best – curators or the crowd? People have their religion about one or the other, however this panel will focus on the overlap, the grey areas and how curating and crowd-sourcing enrich each other.

The 20% More Ridiculous Sale Is Back
Filed Under: announcements On: January 7, 2009 By:jenbekman
Greetings and Happy New Year to you, my collector friends! As evidenced by my absence from your inbox yesterday and today's titillating subject line, your favorite art pushers are not quite back to business as usual. As you well know, we like doing things in twos here at 20x200, so it makes perfect sense that today marks the beginning of our 20% More Ridiculous Sale: The Sequel.
Like it says right there on our home page, 20x200 offers new original editions weekly at ridiculously affordable prices. We're getting even ridiculouser around these parts, for a limited time only. Starting rightthissecond, we're offering a staggering 20% off your already ridiculously affordable print purchase of $50 or more. Enter the coupon code RIDIC at checkout to get your discount.
You can apply the discount to any available print, in any size AND you can buy as many prints as you want. I have a hunch that those new shopping carts we've got are going to come in handy for the particularly addicted among you.
It's a great opportunity to pull the trigger on the pieces you've had an eye on, or maybe you want to take it to the next level and check out our larger prints. Perhaps you're really late to the game with your holiday gift-giving? Fear not! Your indolence has been rewarded. (Ah, if only things always worked this way...) If you're more like Tracy Flick, you might want to get a jump start on next year's shopping list, but I'll tell you right now: you scare me.
![]()
A quick rundown of the details before you start your engines:
- The coupon code RIDIC is working right now.
- It will expire at 11:59PM on Saturday (1/10/09).
- The discount is applicable to your purchase of ANY prints in our available inventory. (That's $400 off a large print! Sweet bejeezus!)
- You can buy as many prints as you want. (Hello, shopping carts. We love you.)
- It can ONLY be applied to purchases of $50 or more.
- Gift Certificates purchases are NOT eligible. (Sorry, Charlie.)
We'll resume our regularly scheduled programming next Tuesday, and I can't wait to get to it. We've got some seriously great stuff lined up for the new year and I'm looking forward to sharing it with all of you!

Carrie Marill: Doing a Lot with Very Little @ Jen Bekaman

Carrie Marill's 16 Cubes
Jen Bekman is pleased to present Doing a Lot With Very Little, an exhibition of new paintings by Carrie Marill. Her work has been exhibited across the United States and featured in publications such as New American Paintings, Wired Magazine, and The New York Times. This will be her first solo exhibition in New York City.
The exhibition will be on view Friday, September 12 through October 18, 2008 at Jen Bekman Gallery, located at 6 Spring Street, New York, NY, 10012. An opening reception for the artist will be held on the evening of Friday, September 12 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the gallery.
In Carrie's own words:
Doing a Lot with Very Little is the result of my endeavor to create a series of non-narrative work. I am using recognizable imagery and the language of systems to create a dialog; the mathematical and the organic cohabitate, creating a world of exploration and curiosity.I chose to paint house plants after coming across some elegant images in a Japanese architecture book. I've painted them before and found myself returning to plants when I needed a break from the detailed birds I had been working on over the past year. I like the quiet and contemplative way drawings of ordinary house plants can say so much, through very little.
The abstract drawings are observations in color, value and composition, generating three-dimensional images in a two dimensional space. They act as pauses between the house plant paintings. It is an organic process, each color choice was in response to the previous color painted. Simple marks combine together to create an optical illusion, much like the subtle value changes and intricate lines that make up the images of house plants.

Ornithology postcard image by Carrie Marill
This year our summer group show is united around things that fly, specifically those belonging to the branch of zoology known as Ornithology. Jen Bekman Gallery will be showing paintings, drawings and photographs from a talented lot, some of whom you already know from their 20x200 editions.
Artists in the exhibition:
Echo Eggebrecht | Todd Forsgren | Laura Levine | Carrie Marill | Christina Muraczewski | Victoria Neel | Lamar Peterson | Jason Polan | Amy Ross | Alec Soth | Amy Stein | Keith Taylor | Bert Teunissen | Luke Stephenson
The show opens Wednesday June 25th from 6-8pm, and I hope you get to use this wonderful word or·ni·thol·ogy in a sentence soon. Something akin to, "I'm sorry, I don't have time for a cup of tea, I'm on my way to see Ornithology". Rhyming is entirely optional. Finding exceptional art is a given.

Pollution Post Unlimited by Andrew MacRae
Friends, if you're all OMG! TGIF! today because you've been cooped up working indoors all week while the weather's (finally) been lovely outside, I feel your pain. Before letting you go for the weekend though, I feel like it's my duty to point out that if you still haven't signed up to receive our fantastic newsletters yet, you're missing out. I mean, our newsletters, all missives straight from our fearless leader Jen Bekman, alert you to our newest editions before they appear on the site! We've had some recent editions sell out almost immediately after the newsletter started hitting inboxes—Luke Strosnider's Every Chair At the Visual Studies Workshop, Carlo van de Roer's Bondi Baths, two pieces by the Starn twins were all gone within minutes—so signing up for our early warning system is the only way to ensure you have a chance greater than zero of getting particular pieces.
Our Raul wrote some notes on quick selling editions last week and it's well worth a read, especially if you missed out on one of those pieces I mentioned earlier! And if you did, maybe you will take some consolation in the fact that I did too—so when I say I know how you feel, I really really do. There are precious few prints left of Andrew MacRae's beautiful Pollution Post Unlimited (view larger image), maybe snapping one up right now before anyone else does will assuage the pain.

The Sneak Peak is Over...And We're Off!
Filed Under: press On: September 15, 2007 By:20x200

Hello art lovers and welcome! My name is Mike and I will be assisting here on the blog, helping to fill you in on updates and exciting tidbits as well as all the latest with artists and new editions.
Since Jen announced the launch of 20x200 on Personism back in April, we have all been anxiously awaiting the reveal of her latest project. A lot of buzz has followed and it's fantastic that we are finally here.
I had the chance to attend a status meeting midway during the process with Jen and the rest of the 20x200 team, and sat in a trance as they engaged in a rapid spitfire of debate over a slew of technical, aesthetic and logistical issues. You can find a nice rendition of the development and creation process from chief orchestrator extraordinaire, Raul: here.
Fast-forward a couple of months later, and we have live editions up-and-running, with many admirers already gushing over the work available for purchase. (Gallery Hopper and artist Matthew Langley are pining for Tema Stuaffer, and Amy Stein has quickly grabbed an Amy Ross print for herself, while others are trying their best not to succumb to the temptation for as long as they can.)
A recapitulation of this week's 20x200 mentions:
Todd Walker of Gallery Hopper:
"Whatever reservations I have about the value of 20X200 to the participating artists and photographers, from a purely materialistic impulse, it's hard to pass up a 16"x20" Tema Stauffer print for $200."
Melissa Lyttle from APhotoADay.org has this to say about Jen and 20x200:
I like that she's trying to make art affordable as well as trying to get the public to support emerging artists. It's a win-win.
It will be interesting to see how hungry the masses are for art in large editions at low prices, but I know I will keep coming back for more. The big Wall Street collectors may be hurting these days, but that shouldn't stop us hoi polloi from getting into the game and start building our own collections.
Notcot.org, the community of design lovers and the congnescenti's guide to instantaneous fixes on art, technology, and products, loves 20x200 and Amy Ross. Danconnortown says that 20x200 makes available: "Great art at great prices."
UnBeige's Alissa Walker gives praise to Jen and finds meaning in her life:
If there's one person who keeps us going every day when we're confronted with this crusty old keyboard and an empty screen, it's UnBeige founder Jen Bekman. Because if this whole blogging thing doesn't work out, we think, hey, maybe we'll go on to run a famous gallery in New York. And maybe we'll start a new affordable art experiment like 20x200, which just launched in semi-super-secret mode with artists like Kate Bingaman-Burt. And maybe it'll get covered in magazines like Dwell and GOOD.Although, we wonder, if we did all those things, would Bekman realize that we're blatantly ripping her off?
Still...to dream.
