Bears is a series of portraits of the most unusual sort: ordinary teddy bears that have been turned inside out and restuffed. Each animal's appearance is determined by the necessities of the manufacturing process. Simple patterns and devices never meant to be seen are now prominent physical characteristics, giving each one a distinctly quirky personality: their fasteners become eyes, their seams become scars, and their stuffing creeps out in the most unexpected places. Together these images form a topology of strange yet oddly familiar creatures. They are at once hideous yet cuddly, disturbing yet endearing, absurd yet adorable, while offering a metaphor for us all to consider. These bears, which have lived and loved and lost as much as their owners, have suffered and endured through it all. It is by virtue of revealing their inner core might we better understand our own.

I was born in upstate New York in 1968. My family lived in a quaint suburban neighborhood of tree-lined streets. From my mother's brightly colored 1970s decor that mixed avocado-green hues with aqua and rust, to her owl figurine collection (which I have since inherited and added to), to the vast birch forests that butted up against the edges of our neighborhood, the colors and sights of my early days left an indelible mark on my psyche.

Rincon Island, built in 1958, is a man-made island off the coast of Ventura, California. Its palm trees are deceiving; infamous for its oil spills, the island is used to extract and transport crude oil to the shore.

Part of the series, Sweet Water, this imitation desert island is one of many instances throughout Southern California where artificial landscapes and environments have been built. In the course of my travels, I found places that seemed to defy both nature and reason having been transformed from desert into lush palm-tree groves, green lawns and lakes. Like the eroding Rincon Island, most of these transformations are not likely to last.

My paintings are based in the neo-romantic and neo-folk movements. They focus upon elements of personal experience and landscapes that could be interpreted as either dystopian or utopian.

I made Gauntlet while producing work for my Molten Kin show. My paintings were becoming more gothic and the colors more intense. For Gauntlet, I started by putting some pastel down on the paper, observing how the paper reacted, then put down another color and watched the colors blend together. I love to get lost in the act of making art, being in the moment. When the pastel was completed and I paused to see what was going to happen next, there was so much transformative energy there. I wanted a vessel, something to take us to the other side, moving forward fast.

Agoraphobia is part of my ongoing series of Newspaper Blackout Poems: poetry made by taking an article from The New York Times and blacking it out with a Sharpie marker, leaving only a few choice words behind.
In the series offSET, I use my experience as a still photographer on motion pictures as a starting point, but turn my camera away from the action — off set. I am intrigued by where the artifice and illusion of movie making intermingle with the 'real.' Hunting for images that occupy this space, I slip behind the metaphoric curtain of center stage. I wander along the fringe of the location studying the spectacle before me, yet looking for things unnoticed by others. In this realm, I have the freedom to capture the unscripted: authentic moments found within the contrived environment of a stage set, images that feature traces of the artifice being created in real-world locations and quirky details normally hidden just out of frame. Re-contexualizing these images, I create my own mysterious slivers of narrative that highlight the overlooked, the unexpected and the poetic.

This image, offSET #29, New York, taken entirely out of its original context, implies its own cinematic moment. Yet the details are elusive, suspended between the artificial and the authentic.

I didn't dare eat candy during Lent because the saints were watching. Our old house was haunted—our dad said so. We imagined a wolf roamed our neighborhood because it was fun to be scared. I thought our family was ideal. I believed in Santa until I was 13. I clung tightly to the things I was taught, my heavy cloaks of security. Like most, I've unraveled them slowly and steadily, being careful not to rip out all the seams through the years.

I think about the beliefs and stories that were handed down to me and I reinterpret them in my paintings. Family folklore, backyard rituals, religious sacraments, ghost stories, church, school, obedience and trust in what you're told are among my subjects. The things we're taught can be learned a thousand different ways. I like for the familiar to seem a little unfamiliar and complicated, because it is.

I look at images from the past as I work because they're heartbreaking and so haunting—what was never can be again. I mess with my imagery, layering and wearing it away until I've made a painting that makes you notice the paint as much as the pictures.

"For the Starns, the six-sided nature of snow crystals appears less important than the ways in which the flakes hover between one state and another. As they are being photographed they are in a process of alteration from solid to liquid, from organized form in space to aqueous blob on a surface, and thus suggest a transitiveness that photography, as a medium devoted to stilling the moment, would seem to contradict. Similarly, as was true of the pictures of leaf veins and tree branches, light seems not so much to shine on the snowflakes as it shines through them. Instead of appearing as specimens, in the manner of 19th century scientific observation, the snowflakes are objects of transformation.

Few of the Starns’ snowflakes are models of perfection, and in this they remind one of finding starfish and seashells scoured by the tides and left to dry on sandy beaches. Many have parts missing, or they have all their detailed armatures on one side but not the other. Here again, the Starns’ images exceed the aesthetic register of the catalog. Unlike industrial structures, or man-made devices, imperfection is an essential part of their beauty and poignancy…

Here is material evidence of the Starns' interest in the phenomenological character of the natural world, cast into being against the certitude of our own impermanence. The photographs speak of the fragile delicacy of our ever-warming world while being themselves a visual bulwark against despair, and they draw us, like moths to light, to the pleasures of sight that but for the camera would exceed the human eye."

I'm interested in geometric abstraction that reflects our vulnerability and uncertainty about ourselves. Using a limited vocabulary, I try to merge the synthetic with the natural while exploring the playful side of the "cosmic" in abstract art.

Color is very important in my paintings. It allows somewhat familiar forms to become highly personal and subtly eccentric. Also important is that the hand is evident, that my paintings are not perfect—that they stumble and falter, and reflect the joy in being human.

I use geometric patterns, improvised marks and vivid color to depict a state of flux. Opaque and transparent shapes mingle to create ambiguous spaces. Clashing colors create new harmonies that vibrate. I approach each painting with general ideas in mind, but I never know where they may lead. All preliminary marks, little catastrophes and drips are visible to show the experimentation and thought that goes into it. Through the marks make, I invite the viewer to see the process of painting.

Recently, I've been challenging the visual vocabulary I've created and have introduced bold calligraphic and scribbled marks. They create a dramatic layer of space that thrusts forward and pushes back other elements. They allow me to detach from what I've painted before and begin anew. These new additions force me to question both my comfort level and ideas of what a painting should be.

These four photographs are taken from the series The Games We Play. The photographs in this series depict sporting environments. The photographs were all taken in the UK and the USA over two years in 2006 and 2007.

Setting out to photograph such places, I decided to portray them as simply as possible. Therefore the photographs are not manipulated in the darkroom or on a computer. The photographs were shot in available light if indoors, and in flat light if outside. The prints are straightforward positive reproductions taken from neutral scans of the large format negatives.
