Idaho Springs, Colorado

ARTIST STATEMENT

Idaho Springs, Colorado is from the series Westward.

The desire for an American photographer to set out across the United States with no other intention but to look is almost an inherent part of the medium itself. Westward represents my experience of traveling west, specifically my relocation from Minnesota to rural Idaho. It reflects my experience of the road, open landscapes and the people that inhabit them. It was a journey full of loneliness, insight and, ultimately, self-discovery. Most importantly, Westward is the product of intense desire: a desire to explore the path less traveled, to find what was over the next hill and to experience the next sunset. These desires have roots in the earliest exploration of the American West, a part of the country which, for me, still offers the sense of mystery and awe that greeted its earliest photographers.
