Stars and Stripes

ARTIST STATEMENT

Stars and Stripes is a personal piece based on a rejected New Yorker cover sketch. That sketch had the same aerial view of the upper deck, but, in it, the players were all looking up at the viewer, bowing and tipping their hats as if they were stage actors receiving appreciative applause. Baseball, after all, is a performance meant to entertain.

When I conceived this piece, I instead made it about the geometry of the field and the action that is constantly taking place. I had originally thought of making a diptych, the second painting identical to this one, but fast-forwarded to show what happened after the batter hit the pitched ball. I never did paint that second piece, though.
