Natural Selections XI

ARTIST STATEMENT

For the past decade, I have been observing and interacting with the landscape, examining our constructed environs through the mediums of photography and video. The Natural Selections series explores interventions in the landscape and the photographic frame through the withdrawal of information. The process at once removes objects and highlights their presence through that absence.

My interest in artifice and the intersection of natural and manmade features in the landscape probably came from growing up in Baltimore, in a house that straddled the border between urban and suburban living. These types of borders and transitions have always fascinated me. There are often strange markers, both manmade and natural, that delineate these intersections. They change our subjective view of the landscape and affect our interpretation of nature, home and the world.
