The Weight of the Bridge

ARTIST STATEMENT

The Weight of the Bridge and Mercedes Planter are representative of my studio practice and parts of my daily life. In the studio, I research architecture and watercolor. Outside of the studio, I am fortunate to live in the middle of New York City, with examples of historical architecture all around me. I am also able to frequently take trips to Wisconsin to be with my family and recuperate from city life.

The Weight of the Bridge is a painting of the Brooklyn Bridge, which I see multiple times a day. I walk under it on my way to and from my studio. I walk over it when I need to feel inspired or just want to shop at Century 21!

The Brooklyn Bridge is important to many people; in my mind, it represents the progress and hope that are a part of change. My painting of the Brooklyn Bridge refers to the time of waiting before changes and transitions. The waiting is weighty; it is as massive as the bridge. But once the waiting is over, and change has occurred, everything is different, unexpected and better.
