Bonaparte 9

ARTIST STATEMENT

In our Typographic Number Series we explore design and color when confined to representational information. The number silhouettes are manipulated into patterns that are both communicative and decorative. With the addition of color, we layer transparent and opaque pigments and are interested in what new colors are created, or how these colors react with one another. In the medium- and large-size prints we are manipulating the surface of the pigment print. In the 17″×22″ medium-size print, the outline layer—in the Five that would be the blue and in the Nine, the white—we letterpressed over the pigment print, leaving an impression in the paper with a transparent color. For the 30″×40″ large-size we silkscreened the same outline layers—the velvety opaque ink sits on the surface of the paper. It is our intention that the viewer appreciates the design, the curve of line or the positive/negative space of numbers in a new way.

Numbers are powerful figures; for the 20×200 first anniversary we produced a <a href =“http://www.20×200.com/art/2008/09/ziggurat-5.html”>five and a <a href =“http://www.20×200.com/art/2008/09/bonaparte-9.html”>nine for the fifth of September, the beginning of 20×200. The number five is the number of the human being. The body forms the pentagon when arms and legs are outstretched. In the Greco-Roman culture, five was the nuptial number of love and union. It is the number of Venus. The number nine is the number of completeness. It marks the end of the human gestation period and the complete circle (360=3+6+0=9). In Hebrew, it denotes pure intelligence. In the Mayan culture there were nine underworlds, each ruled by a God. We find this reference to “nine underworlds” present in many cultures and beliefs.
