ARTIST STATEMENT

I am drawn to the seductive and surreal qualities of nature, especially in relation to culture. I am interested in how we relate to nature, how we try to shape and contain it and its ability to grow wild despite our best attempts to confine it. I use photography to explore how these layers of both wildness and containment develop in the landscape, whether urban, suburban or exurban.

This image is from a series called Borderland that I made while living in London. I would spend my days exploring the outer edges of the city in search of green spaces. I rounded a corner one day and came upon this algae-encrusted pond. The otherworldly glow was parted only temporarily by the geese as they paddled through. This was one of my first explorations in the outskirts of London, and the one that got me exploring the urban fringe as a way of making work.
