A Map of the Open Country of a Woman's Heart

ARTIST STATEMENT

Our path to presenting this edition is a love story in its own right. Our fearless founder Jen Bekman came across the map and its terrain a l’amour and was instantly smitten. Impulsively (as one often is concerning affairs of the heart) she posted it to her Tumblr. For many, it was clearly love at first sight: Jen’s post was “liked” (loved?!) by hundreds. Even The Atlantic ran a piece on the map the following day. The moral to the story? Looking for art is like looking for love—when you see the one you want, you’ve got to go for it with every bit of your soul.

The original lithograph was produced by D.W. Kellogg & Co., sometime between 1833 and 1842 in Hartford, Connecticut. We tracked it down at the American Antiquarian Society, and are charmed to present it to you as a 20x200 vintage edition, to benefit our Artists’ Fund.

The American Antiquarian Society (AAS) is an independent research library founded in 1812 in Worcester, Massachusetts. The library’s collections document the life of America’s people from the colonial era through the Civil War and Reconstruction. Collections include books, pamphlets, newspapers, periodicals, broadsides, manuscripts, music, graphic arts and local histories.

These prints are created using archival pigment inks on 100% cotton rag paper with a matte finish.

Our quoted dimensions are for the size of paper containing the images, not the printed image itself. We do not alter the aspect ratio, nor do we crop or resize the artists’ originals. All of our prints have a minimum border of .5 inches to allow for framing.

We recommend a custom frame in black solid wood with UV protected plexiglass and a white archival mat. Please note: Framed art may take up to 4 weeks to ship. Available for U.S. orders only.
