Bal d'Hiver, Paris, 1955. Cynthia Balfour rehearsing "Fire Vanquished by Snow." + Bal d'Hiver, Paris, 1955. Cynthia Balfour, back to camera, and Baroness de Cabrol.

ARTIST STATEMENT

The Bal d’Hiver was organized in Paris as a benefit for war orphans, and it was performed on ice by European royalty in costumes donated by couturiers such as Hubert de Givenchy and Christian Dior. An international roster of celebrities attended the event, from the Countess d’Paris to film star Charlie Chaplin. Photographed by Morath in 1955, this story of Parisian society remained unpublished until 2011. These photos take the viewer behind the scenes of this one-of-a-kind gathering, while exhibiting Morath’s extraordinary sense of composition and intensely humanistic approach.

Please note: you’ll be presented with the option to frame these prints after you complete your purchase.
