Monk

ARTIST STATEMENT

Monk was originally painted for the San Francisco Jazz Festival’s 2007 gala dinner and art auction. The festival was celebrating Monk’s work, and I really enjoy painting Jazz figures in a blue setting, hearkening both to the lighting one finds in once-smokey nightclubs as well as to the classic look of Blue Note record covers.

SFJAZZ is an international leader in jazz creation, presentation, and education. The San Francisco-based organization’s 25th Anniversary Gala (May 16, 2008) honors legendary saxophonist and NEA Jazz Master Wayne Shorter in his 75th birthday year.
