ARTIST STATEMENT

Atari represents outdated bits of technological development that are still around, like ideas or beliefs that no longer serve their original purpose, and the difficulty we sometimes have getting rid of them. The games represent the origins of digital and virtual realities, worlds where the people who play the games are the heroes and protagonists in the adventures. The collection of games is a tribute to these digital origins, as well as a tribute to the excellent artwork on these worn out cartridges. Some games show their long lives well, with torn labels and faded inks, while one even has the name of the past owner scrawled on the cover.

These ideas weave into my overall theme of “The Earth on the Back of the Giant Turtle,” a reference to a Native American creation myth. It relates to how the beliefs or values of one culture or time period are going to change or be completely obsolete in the future and how our relationship with reality changes, with that reality becoming more and more of a virtual or digital one today. The use of markers in the original drawings lightens up these themes, as well as giving the sense of youth and playfulness that these games represent.

These prints are created using archival pigment inks on 100% cotton rag paper with a matte finish.

Our quoted dimensions are for the size of paper containing the images, not the printed image itself. We do not alter the aspect ratio, nor do we crop or resize the artists’ originals. All of our prints have a minimum border of .5 inches to allow for framing.

We recommend a custom frame in black solid wood with UV protected plexiglass and a white archival mat. Please note: Framed art may take up to 4 weeks to ship. Available for U.S. orders only.
