ARTIST STATEMENT

There is a tremendous cave on the coast of Kauai where stumbling tourists willingly disappear into the cave’s darkness, illuminating their way with cigarette lighters. I wanted to recreate the memory of that scene with Cave Dwellers. Most of my paintings are begun from experience, from the elements of a memory. Sometimes I like to let the specific elements of those experiences repeat in a new work, allowing them to simplify or clarify something from a moment. However, lately things have ended up more visually complex—with more people, more intense landscapes and more layering.

The original is 20.5″ × 14.25″, gouache and pastel on paper, and no longer available.

These prints are created using archival pigment inks on 100% cotton rag paper with a matte finish.

Our quoted dimensions are for the size of paper containing the images, not the printed image itself. We do not alter the aspect ratio, nor do we crop or resize the artists’ originals. All of our prints have a minimum border of .5 inches to allow for framing.

We recommend a custom frame in white solid wood with UV protected plexiglass and a white archival mat. Please note: Framed art may take up to 4 weeks to ship. Available for U.S. orders only.

  • 8.5"x11" print offered in 14"x16.5" frame (3/4” front profile x 1 1/4” side profile)
  • 17"x22" print offered in 22.5"x27.5" frame (3/4” front profile x 1 1/4” side profile)
  • 30"x40" print is dry mounted and framed to the image (3/4” front profile x 2” side profile), with spacers and enhanced UV plexi glass
