ARTIST STATEMENT

This is an image from a series I worked on since 9/11 called Homeland. The images addressed issues of militarism, security, ideology and identity in contemporary America. A book of these images was published in 2008.

I approached the project from a journalist’s perspective, researching events and scenes suggestive of our current environment. I then worked as a witness, rarely altering or directing what appeared before me, but always looking for images that spoke to something unspoken or unknowingly referenced. The resulting photograph has less to do with the specific details of the event, or the immediate context in which it was made, and more to do with a conversation I was having with myself about America.
