ARTIST STATEMENT

My photographic work deals with the strange, makeshift, and often imperfect ways in which man and nature relate to one another. Whether I am following the journey of pilgrims in the high Andes of Peru, exploring subterranean urban rivers, or noticing the burrowing of Jack Rabbits in a landfill, I am curious to see how these interactions can create improvised environments.

The project Sawdust Mountain focuses on the tenuous relationship between industries reliant upon natural resources and the communities they support. It is the culmination of four years photographing throughout Oregon, Washington and Northern California. The work reveals a landscape imbued with a hardscrabble identity, but uncertain future-no longer the region of boomtowns built upon the riches of massive old growth forests and unending salmon runs. I grew up in this region and the work is a melancholy love letter of sorts, my own personal ramblings.
