ARTIST STATEMENT

This is from my Ideal Bookshelf series. I paint sets of favorites—mine or someone else’s—amalgamated in a picture, even if they don’t usually live on shelves anywhere near each other.

Picking the books that made you who you are today isn’t an easy task, and therefore the results are very special. I think of it as an intimate form of portraiture; a way to illustrate who the subject is on the inside instead of out.

This set happens to be a grouping of my favorite books for young adults. I’ve been more influenced by books I read as a kid than books from any other time in my life. This image includes all the ones I read multiple times between the ages of 8 and 12, and a few newer ones I’ve read more recently, since there’s still a “young adult” in me somewhere.
