First Harvest in the Wilderness with Pileated Woodpecker

ARTIST STATEMENT

In my work, I reconstruct and deconstruct historic paintings and sculptures from American art history to re-present them as modern ruins. Working with fragile materials, including foam core, paper, paint and glue, I recreate the original objects, only to then demolish them by the same devices associated with their historical significance. Posing as artifacts of art history gone awry, the combination of real and fabricated components leaves the viewer to wonder at the veracity of the transformation.

For the Brooklyn Museum, I created this print using a detail from Asher B. Durand’s painting from 1855, First Harvest in the Wilderness. The painting is a cornerstone of the Brookyn Museum’s American collection. It depicts a harmonious scene between nature and man as the sun shines on a field of newly harvested trees. In this print, a Pileated Woodpecker appears to be fooled by the realism of the landscape in the Durand painting and has riddled the surface with holes. The holes in the painting are also reminiscent of machine gun fire. They point to the downside of “progress” and allude to the self-destruction implicit in the painted scene—woodpeckers peck holes to root out infestations. When logging first started in northeast New England, Pileated Woodpeckers faced extinction as the industry began to take a toll on its habitat. In this print, the woodpecker has made a comeback and is perhaps seeking its revenge.
