Many Mountains

ARTIST STATEMENT

When I started this painting, I imagined myself as a traditional landscape painter, painting the hillside or ocean. It then took a turn into the abstract, where I explored concepts of balance, forever, expansion, fear and movement within the painting while still considering the landscape. I also intentionally left it abstract and simple to allow the viewer to bring his or her own story.

In this painting there are many sharp mountains. The mountain image is filled with meaning for me. It comes from my first memorable dream of falling off the top of a mountain. I have used this image for years. Over and over, I put a mountain in my paintings, each time as satisfying as the first time I painted it. The shape on top of the sharp mountains is a pattern that could go on forever; this talks about the idea that if you’re on top of a mountain it feels as if you can see forever.
