Reading & Writing

ARTIST STATEMENT

Reading & Writing, 2007, refers to my core relationship as a cultural consumer and producer. When a writer is creating a story, he is at the same time reading his writing: the act of writing requires reading. The author, as a connoisseur—an expert reader—is both the only possible reader and the only necessary arbiter of authenticity. I believe that the notion of a hypothetical “viewer” can only water down the subtleties and breadth of my own conversation as simultaneous “writer” and “reader.”

This piece manifests my desire to make a novel-length work. Constructed from tangents and partial views, I traverse through color, shape, mark and imagery, reading it like text. I want to make an entire universe of facts to believe in. The fictive time of the narrative(s) is mirrored by the large variety of scale and perspective shifts in the painting. The relative size of the piece to the scale of detail within affords sustained peripheral experience. For me, having peripheral views further prompts my imagination to create a time-based experience. With no prescribed sequence, the story continues to unfold uniquely with each visit; images hide and reveal themselves, the narrative never concludes.
