William Powhida (b. 1976, New York) is a GENIUS artist and reformed critic working in Brooklyn. He studied painting at Syracuse University where he easily received his BFA with honors and received his MFA from the famed (cheap) Hunter College program in New York City.
Powhida has become an international art sello...SENSATION exhibiting everywhere. His work involves socially-transformative narratives that explore the artist's place in the market — from his "letters" to collectors, artists, and dealers, to painting his own press. Recently, his art has transcended the material and absorbed the artist himself. William Powhida is a brilliant and paradoxical idea of success.
One of his experiments in 2009, #class was described in Artforum as "the only thing that's going to stop the trend toward the privatization of cultural institutions and the financialization of art."
He is represented by Schroeder Romero & Shredder in New York, Charlie James Gallery in Los Angeles, and Platform Gallery in Seattle. After being commodified and assimilated into the market, he has taken a step back and is wondering, "What the hell happened?"
After taking on the New Museum, Jerry Saltz named Powhida the second best thing to happen to the art world in 2009, behind Velazquez. Ben Davis of Artnet also said the best thing about the New Museum controversy was Powhida's continuing ascent calling Powhida the "anti-Koons" and a "world class bad ass."
