Significant Objects

ARTIST STATEMENT:

I started Obsessive Consumption in 2002, when I decided to photograph all of my purchases, and in turn, created a brand out of the process to package and promote. I am currently drawing something I purchase every day, happily illustrating for others, teaching design to college kids and making piles of work—zines! pillows! photographs! buttons! more drawings!—that mock/celebrate our relationship to consumer goods.

Proceeds from the sale of these prints will benefit Girls Write Now, contributing to Significant Object's grand total donation.

Girls Write Now provides guidance, support, and opportunities for New York City's underserved or at-risk high school girls, enabling them to develop their creative, independent voices, explore careers in professional writing, and learn how to make healthy choices in school, career and life.

Significant Objects is a quasi-anthropological experiment analyzing how inanimate objects become significant via narrative—and it's also turned into a literary journal secretly published on eBay. Most recently, it has become a fundraising outfit for good causes. Proceeds from v.3 benefit Girls Write Now.
