Disaster at 1:47 in the Morning, May 4, 2003
by Mike Estabrook

My work mixes personal and cultural imagination, fantasy with reality, politics with absurdity. I graft these elements together to highlight the co-dependence of individual creation and mass media (and mass persuasion), and to reveal the influence of both on politics, spirituality and perception itself.

I do this by imposing my own fantastical creations onto pre-existing cultural materials, such as movie clips, magazine pages, pamphlets and printed cardboard boxes. I am particularly drawn to materials that are politically loaded, like army recruiting propaganda, gun magazines, westerns, war photography, and recently, the Zapruder footage of the JFK assassination. The end product is as diverse in media as these source materials, taking the forms of drawing, animation, video, installation, painting and collage.
