EDITION INFORMATION

Lift

My recent paintings focus on houses and commercial structures captured in a state of partial construction. These works explore the building process and, in it, find a metaphor for the activity of painting. My intention is to draw a connection between the construction of a building out of raw materials (lumber, steel, and concrete) and the construction of a picture out of raw materials (paint, canvas, wood).

I made this painting, Lift, because I am fascinated by construction cranes. They are ubiquitous in the Denver metropolitan area, even during this period of economic strain. In their geometry and complexity, cranes resemble the internal structure of the very architecture that they are helping to assemble. Even though a number of tragic crane accidents have been in the news over the past year, I still see cranes as fundamentally hopeful. This painting is about defying gravity, both literally and figuratively.
