Embers of the Maritime
Embers of the Maritime
by Greg Lindquist

My work explores landscape as a memorial. As a painting, a landscape is a physical fact and work of the mind. Landscapes are recorded moments by which we process and order our external environment. They reveal as much about the culture in which they were made as the topography they depict. My most recent body of work documents a Brooklyn in transition. Depicting specific sites of residential construction and decay in the present Williamsburg and Redhook waterfronts, my paintings evoke Brooklyn's industrial past and future development. As American manufacturing has moved overseas, these unused warehouse buildings and structures—icons of the industrial revolution—have been transformed/reclaimed by luxury. Inspired by construction materials, I use metallic pigments, to suggest shimmering bodies of water, overcast or polluted skies, or structural beams.
