Mercedes Planter
by Amy Park
The Weight of the Bridge and Mercedes Planter are representative of my studio practice and parts of my daily life. In the studio, I research architecture and watercolor. Outside of the studio, I am fortunate to live in the middle of New York City with examples of historical architecture all around me. I am also able to frequently take trips to Wisconsin to be with my family and recuperate from city life.
Mercedes Planter is from a day I spent with my dearest friends at a perennial farm outside of Milwaukee. We filled the trunk of an early 1970's Mercedes with plants; I had decided to buy succulents for my very modest backyard back in NYC. I carried them on the airplane in grocery bags.
This painting is one of my favorites. It combines the structure of the car with the organic quality of the flowers; it is painted tightly and loosely. It is about the city and the country, and how I spend every day no matter where I am: I try to bring a little bit of one to the other, to balance my life.
