Torn
by Jonathan Allen

Allen's work culls imagery from art history, pop culture and current events and reassembles them in surreal dreamscapes. These dreamscapes are often fragmented and enigmatic, opening a critical window on our current political and environmental condition.

Torn is the first in a series of 100 mixed-media collages, titled Night Stand Apocalypse. This ongoing series, begun in 2005, merges drawing, painting and collage techniques in seamless contemporary visions. Borrowing imagery from sources as varied as Star Wars, iPod advertisements and butterfly wing structures, Night Stand Apocalypse takes a mirror to our times.

Works from this series have been exhibited at Oliver Kamm/5BE, Rotunda Gallery, & GO NORTH Gallery. Torn was shown in the group exhibition Evolve Dissolve, at GO NORTH Gallery in Beacon NY, in 2007.
