Fortune (will be successful in...)
by Kirby Pilcher

This image was made while eating take-out at my kitchen table alone. About to graduate, with no job lined up and an unsettling student loan debt, success was something that seemed unattainable yet so desperately necessary. The fortune cookie was sealed in plastic but the fortune was outside of the cookie and half of it severed in the crimped edge of the plastic packaging. It was an odd sight, but I rationalized that even fortune cookies are made and packaged in factories, and this particular fortune had simply been a little off on the assembly line and was caught in the sealer. The cookie in the package was void of a complete fortune, which was the most disturbing thing to me during a time I was questioning every aspect of the decisions I had made in the past few years.

This image is part of a larger project titled Room Temperature which consists of images of objects and places that represent similar observances of relative successes and failures.
