This is an image from a series I have been working on since 9-11 called Homeland. The images address issues of militarism, security, ideology and identity in contemporary America. A book of these images will be published later this year.
I approached the project from a journalist's perspective, researching events and scenes suggestive of our current environment. I then worked as a witness, rarely altering or directing what appears before me, but always looking for images that speak to something unspoken or unknowingly referenced. The resulting photograph has less to do with the specific details of the event or immediate context in which it is was made, and more to do with a conversation I am having with myself about America.
