I am drawn to the seductive and surreal qualities of nature,
especially in relation to culture. I am interested in how we relate to
nature, how we try to shape and contain it, and its ability to grow
wild despite our best attempts to confine it. I use photography to
explore how these layers of both wildness and containment develop in
the landscape, whether urban, suburban, or exurban.
This image is from a series called Borderland that I made while living
in London. I would spend my days exploring the outer edges of the city
in search of green spaces. I rounded a corner one day and came upon
this algae-encrusted pond. The otherworldly glow was parted only
temporarily by the geese as they paddled through. This was one of my
first explorations in the outskirts of London, and the one that got me
exploring the urban fringe as a way of making work.
