My current body of work resides within the ideas of desire and regret. Specifically, my interest is in an online group, immersed in communicating about their interpersonal relationships, desires, and regrets through an anonymous e-mail posting.
Internet blogging, Myspace, Facebook and other shared online communities have transitioned from being a phenomenon to becoming a staple in the way we communicate. These communities serve as a platform for people to share their personal thoughts, ideas, and emotions in an open online diary. One of these communities, Craigslist, is the leading national classifieds service, it has taken the place of traditional newspaper want adds. One section has captured my attention. In "Missed Connections" people anonymously post recollections of what may have been, or a special moment or a connection with someone that was unfortunately missed. I obsessively read these "lost moments" and am continuously intrigued by the story telling process. This is a place for fantasy, confessions, last chances, searching, and a home for people's own obsessions to surface.
My role as a photographer is to capture the dynamic between this groups' freedom to author their personal sentiment while knowingly not being identified with their posting. For example, as I read the post, "I could put my arms around every boy I see...... they'd only remind me of you.", I start to visualize who this anonymous person may be. In my attempt to further understand their motivations I contact these individuals to set up an interview and capture a photograph that identifies them.
